Ásáá: A Book Contemporary African Literature Lovers Won’t Want to Miss

The story opens with stark intensity and follows the protagonist throughout a landscape scarred with gender bias, rejection, and abuse. The author’s portrait of those issues is scarring and needed: one that lights up the devastating aftermath of such experiences.

Some of the novel’s real strengths lie in the corrosive effect of culture and tradition. In this struggle to reconcile his desires with societal expectations, the protagonist poignantly shows something that most people can relate to in their lives; the personal narrative is deftly interwoven with greater social concerns to make a tapestry both rich and intricate.

Although unquestionably heavy in its subject matter, the novel also acts as a showing of how much of a remarkable comeback the human spirit can be. Healing and redemption for the protagonist are almost heralded; with each step he takes, the flicker of light amidst the pervading darkness glimmers just that much brighter.

Ásáá is a demanding read because of its heaviness. It is bound to be thought-provoking, conversation-inspiring, and empathy-demanding, a book that doesn’t easily leave the mind at the close of the last page.
